SGT. Adam Kisielewski - Age 21
USMC

I had been in Iraq for one month when my Lieutenant and I were going through a School in Al Karmahq, where we had gained intel that something was going on. Earlier that same week we, as well as another platoon, were engaged in a fire fight at that school.

On our way back in from a six day rotation, my Lieutenant wanted to check out the school. He and I cleared out the entire school. However, when we opened the door it was booby trapped with a 155 round. The explosion killed the Lieutenant and I lost my right arm and left leg.

When I arrived at Bethesda Naval Hospital, in addition to the loss of my arm and leg, the bones in my right leg were shattered, my kneecap was completely destroyed and both of my eardrums were perforated, but I could still hear. I was later moved to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to continue my recovery and also for rehabilitation.

I had just gotten married in June 2005. I met Carrie while I was stationed at Camp David for two years protecting President Bush. My wife and I recently bought a house in Maryland.

War Stories
By most accounts, Adam Kisielewski should be dead. But he's more alive than ever before... More alive than most of us.
